Officials say that one motorist died and three motorists were injured in a U-turn collision in Ione Saturday morning.

According to California Highway Patrol, 20-year-old Adam S. Vanlandingham of Pittsburg was attempting to make a U-turn in his vehicle near the intersection of Ione Road and Carbondale Road when he failed to yield and collided with the pickup truck driven by 48-year-old Jeffrey P. Allgeyer of Ione.

One of Mr. Vanlandingham’s passengers, 19-year-old Gerard Sprague of Concord, was transported to University of California Davis Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.

Mr. Vanlandingham and his other passenger, 21-year-old Xavier D. Ward of Pittsburg, were hospitalized with serious injuries. Mr. Allgeyer sustained minor injuries.

Officials are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

In 2008, there were a total of 37,261 traffic fatalities in the United States according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
