Officials say a worker died after becoming trapped in a Trabuco Canyon trench cave-in Friday afternoon.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, 58-year-old Blas Serrano-Escudero of Santa Ana was installing pipework in a trench near 31651 Manzana Way around 3:10 p.m. when the trench collapsed around him. It is not clear what caused or triggered the trench collapse.

Mr. Serrano-Escudero died at the scene. No one else was hurt.

Officials are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

According to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, 4,690 workers were killed on the job in 2010 — more than 90 a week or nearly 13 deaths every day.
