Officials say a bicyclist died after being struck in a hit-and-run in Campbell Tuesday morning.

According to California Highway Patrol, an unidentified 59-year-old male bicyclist was traveling near the intersection of the San Tomas Expressway and Campbell Avenue when he was struck around 11:45 a.m. by a 2004 Toyota Camry driven by 20-year-old Melanie Souza of San Jose. Ms. Souza then left the scene and stopped at Peet’s Coffee to call a family member.

The bicyclist was transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center where he died from his injuries. His identity has not been released.

Ms. Souza returned to the scene with a family member. It is not clear if she will be charged.

Officials are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

In 2009, 630 pedalcyclists were killed and an additional 51,000 were injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

UPDATE: The bicyclist has been identified as Stanislaw Wicka of Santa Clara.
