Police say a traveler was killed and another hospitalized Monday following an accident in the Los Banos area.

According to reports, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled east along California State Route 152. As the vehicle approached San Luis Reservoir’s Romero Visitors Center, around 3:55 a.m., it reportedly veered into oncoming traffic and made contact with another car.

Paramedics responded to the scene, but were unable to save at least one occupant. A subject was also taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital for treatment.

No names or vehicles descriptions have been released. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the number of fatalities along America’s roadways declined in 2010 for the fifth-straight year. The total number of highway deaths last year was 32,788, down 3 percent over 2009.
