A pedestrian died after being struck by several vehicles on Alicia Parkway in Mission Viejo Friday morning.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, an unidentified male pedestrian was attempting to cross the roadway around 6:35 a.m. when he was struck by a vehicle driven by an unidentified motorist. One or two other vehicles driven by unidentified motorists struck the pedestrian and fled the scene. Another vehicle then struck the pedestrian as he laid in the roadway.

The pedestrian died from his injuries. His identity has not been released pending family notification.

Officials are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that a pedestrian dies in a U.S. traffic accident every 110 minutes and one is injured every nine minutes.
