Los Angeles County, California – January 7, 2013

Police say a female motorist died Monday during a collision with a train in the Santa Fe Springs area.

According to reports, an unidentified operator was at the controls of a train as it traveled through the area around 11:40 p.m. As the driver approached a crossing, it made contact with a car.

Investigators say the impact left one occupant trapped in the wreckage. Firefighters used hydraulic extrication tools to free the victim from the wreckage.

Paramedics rushed her to a nearby hospital, but doctors were unable to save her. It is unclear whether all nearby crossings were in proper working order.
