Police say a traveler died Tuesday during an accident in the San Leandro area.

According to troopers with the California Highway Patrol, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a Lincoln Town Car sedan as it traveled near the corner of 98th Avenue and Bancroft Avenue. Around 11:15 p.m., it made contact with a silver BMW coupe.

Paramedics responded to the scene, but were unable to save one occupant. Officers at the scene took one of the drivers into custody.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the number of fatalities along America’s roadways declined in 2010 for the fifth-straight year. The total number of highway deaths last year was 32,788, down 3 percent over 2009.
