Sacramento County, California – December 1, 2012

Police say a female motorist died Saturday when her vehicle struck a tree in the Rio Vista area.

According to troopers with the California Highway Patrol, 29-year-old Ryde resident Katherine Marie Znamirowski was behind the wheel of a Toyota Prius as it traveled along California State Route 160 near Isleton. As Ms. Znamirowski approached Anchor Drive, around 8:55 p.m., she apparently lost control.

Investigators say the Prius veered off the roadway and smashed into a nearby tree. Paramedics responded to the scene, but were unable to save Ms. Znamirowski.

It is unclear whether anyone else was in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the number of fatalities along America’s roadways declined in 2010 for the fifth-straight year. The total number of highway deaths last year was 32,788, down 3 percent over 2009.
