Police say a female traveler died Sunday during an accident in the Sunnyvale area.

According to officers with the Sunnyvale Police Department, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled through the area around 2:35 p.m. As the driver approached the corner of San Lusito Way and East Duane Avenue, it made contact with two other cars.

Paramedics responded to the scene and transported a female occupant of one of the vehicles, 34, to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, but doctors were unable to save her. Six other people were also hospitalized, including a male, 37, who suffered head trauma and was taken to Stanford University Hospital.

Witnesses have been asked to call (408) 730-7109 with any additional information. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the number of fatalities along America’s roadways declined in 2010 for the fifth-straight year. The total number of highway deaths last year was 32,788, down 3 percent over 2009.
