Police say a pedestrian died Thursday after being hit by a vehicle in a rural area near Modesto.
According to deputies with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department, 41-year-old Patrick Michael Denny was behind the wheel of a truck as it pulled a trailer along Crows Landing Road, near Keyes Road. Investigators believe Mr. Denny had been illegally dumping garbage on nearby property belonging to Norman Hyer.
Upon seeing the truck approach, Mr. Hyer’s son, Stanley Roy Hyer, 52, used an all-terrain vehicle in an attempt to intercept Mr. Denny. By the time Norman Hyer arrived at the scene, his son was lying prone on the roadway, having been hit by t the truck.
Paramedics responded to the scene, but were unable to save Stan Hyer. Authorities later took Mr. Denny into custody on suspicion of resisting arrest, murder and forgery.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that a pedestrian dies in a U.S. traffic accident every 110 minutes and one is injured every nine minutes.
