Riverside County, California – October 11, 2012
A suspect allegedly detonated an explosive device Thursday while on the run from police in the San Jacinto area.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, 35-year-old Hemet resident Jesus Emiliano Almanza was operating a 2007 Nissan pickup truck through the San Jacinto area. As Mr. Almanza approached the corner of Shaver Street and Camino Los Banos, a deputy initiated a traffic stop.
Rather than cooperating, Mr. Almanza attempted to flee, eventually striking another vehicle. He then exited the pickup, drew a handgun and detonated an explosive device.
Neither Mr. Almanza, nor the deputy were hurt in the blast. The condition of two passengers in the pickup is unclear.
Officers arrested Mr. Almanza and he is under suspicion of assault on a law-enforcement official, possessing a firearm, disregarding public safety, receiving stolen goods and possessing a destructive device.
