Humboldt County, California — October 30, 2012

Two Eureka residents were killed in a head-on crash on California Route 299 by Blue Lake Tuesday night.

The California Highway Patrol reports the crash occurred around 8 p.m. by Essex Lane when a Chrysler PT Cruiser was heading west on eastbound Route 299 and crashed head-on with an eastbound GMC box truck.

Both the wrong-way driver, 58-year-old Linda Renee Scott, and the other driver, 61-year-old  Francis “Frank” Robert Borgelin, were killed in the accident, the report says. Two other vehicles reportedly struck debris that was in the roadway following that collision, but those drivers were not injured.

It is unclear why Ms. Scott was driving the wrong direction, but authorities do not believe alcohol played a role.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, wrong-way drivers are involved in 1.5 percent of all fatal crashes.
