Fresno County, California — October 18, 2012

A Clovis man was killed when he crashed into a utility pole on Auberry Road Thursday morning.

The California Highway Patrol reports Tyler Olivas, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 2:40 a.m. crash, which occurred just south of the intersection at Millerton Road.

Troopers say his northbound Dodge Dakota was traveling at a high rate of speed when it went airborne after hitting a dirt embankment and then struck the pole.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, trees are the most common fixed object struck. Fifty percent of deaths in fixed object crashes in 2010 involved a vehicle striking a tree. Utility poles and traffic barriers were the next most common objects struck, accounting for 14 and 8 percent of deaths, respectively.
