Riverside County, California – October 1, 2012

Police say a traveler was injured Monday during an accident in the Corona area.

According to troopers with the California Highway Patrol, 31-year-old Long Beach resident Jesse Tapia was behind the wheel of a truck as it traveled west along California State Route 91. As Mr. Tapia approached Exit 44 (Green River Road), during the evening hours, he made contact with another car.

The impact caused the truck to ricochet into the median barrier and catch fire. Paramedics responded to the scene, but were unable to save Mr. Tapia. It is unclear whether anyone else was injured.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the number of fatalities along America’s roadways declined in 2010 for the fifth-straight year. The total number of highway deaths last year was 32,788, down 3 percent over 2009.
