Police say a motorcyclist died Thursday during an accident in the Sepulveda Pass area.

According to troopers with the California Highway Patrol, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled south along Interstate 405. As the driver approached Exit 61 (Mulholland Drive), around 10:20 p.m., it made contact with at least one other vehicle, including a motorcycle.

Paramedics responded to the scene, but were unable to save the rider, 58-year-old Los Angeles resident Anthony Darrell Mayes. No other names or vehicle descriptions have been released.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration there were 4,778 fatalities as a result of collisions involving motorcycles in the United States in 2006.
