San Bernardino County, California – September 29, 2012
Police say a stranded motorist died Saturday after being hit by a vehicle in the Chino Hills area.
According to deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled south along California State Route 71. As the driver approached Exit 4 (California State Route 83/Euclid Avenue/Butterfield Ranch Road, around 11:05 p.m., he came upon a disabled 2009 Toyota Yaris compact.
Investigators say the motorist allowed his vehicle to drift onto the shoulder, where it struck the Yaris. Paramedics responded to the scene and transported the occupant of the Yaris, 57-year-old Lake Elsinore resident Dallas Dunn, to Chino’s Chino Valley Medical Center, but doctors were unable to save him.
Mr. Dunn was reportedly waiting for a tow truck after his Yaris experienced mechanical failure. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the number of fatalities along America’s roadways declined in 2010 for the fifth-straight year. The total number of highway deaths last year was 32,788, down 3 percent over 2009.
