Police say a died Monday during a collision at a freeway junction the Costa Mesa area.

According to the California Highway Patrol, an unidentified rider was headed south along Interstate 405. As the biker approached the junction with California State Route 73, around 6:25 p.m., it was involved in a collision.

Paramedics responded to the scene but were unable to save the male rider. It is unclear whether any other cars were involved.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration there were 4,778 fatalities as a result of collisions involving motorcycles in the United States in 2006.
