Riverside County, California — August 18, 2012

Police say a motorcyclist died Saturday during a collision in the Palm Springs area.

According to deputies with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, 21-year-old Draper, Utah native Joshua Vielstich was riding a Yamaha R1 bike west along Interstate 10. As Mr. Vielstich approached Exit 120 (North Indian Canyon Drive), around 8:10 p.m., he struck a sedan from behind.

Paramedics responded to the scene, but were unable to save Mr. Vielstich. Sergio Martinez was riding with Mr. Vielstich at the time, although it is unclear whether he was hurt.

Reportedly, Mr. Vielstich was a member of the 1st Tank Battalion of the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Afghanistan. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration there were 4,778 fatalities as a result of collisions involving motorcycles in the United States in 2006.
