Los Angeles County, California — August 19, 2012

Police say one traveler was killed and another injured Sunday when a vehicle crashed in the Valencia area.

According to deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a blue Mazda Miata convertible as it traveled north along McBean Parkway. As the vehicle approached Avenida Navarre, around 1:25 a.m., the driver apparently lost control.

Investigators say the car veered into the center divider, causing it to ricochet into two nearby trees. Two victims were transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital where one of them was pronounced dead.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the number of fatalities along America’s roadways declined in 2010 for the fifth-straight year. The total number of highway deaths last year was 32,788, down 3 percent over 2009.

UPDATE: The deceased victim has been identified as 21-year-old Valencia resident Tugba Elbirlik.

I was @ the accident on McBean Pky . on Sunday morning. I helped and stayed with both victims until the Parametics came. My heart and prayers goes out to the families. I was so sad about the so very young female that passed. I was holding her hand for awhile in between taking care of both patients. The Police and Parametics did an excellent job.
