Officials say a wheelchair pedestrian died Tuesday after being hit by a sport-utility vehicle in the Hesperia area.

According to the San Bernardino County Fire Department, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of an SUV as it traveled north along Seventh Street. As the vehicle approached Manzanita Street, around 9:50 p.m., it struck a pedestrian crossing the street in a wheelchair, also headed north.

Paramedics responded to the scene, but were unable to save the victim. The incident remains under investigation.

UPDATE: The deceased victim has been identified as Hesperia resident David Rivera, 40. The vehicle involved has been described as a Jeep sport-utility vehicle.

UPDATE: The driver, 23-year-old Victorville resident Rachel Lynn Walbye, showed signs of impairment at the scene. After being treated for undisclosed injuries, Ms. Walbye was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter.
