Riverside County, California — July 27, 2012

Police say a pedestrian died Friday after being hit by a vehicle in the Moreno Valley area.

According to deputies with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled near the intersection of Filaree Avenue and Perris Boulevard. Around 11:40 p.m., the car hit 21-year-old Moreno Valley resident Daylon Woods.

The impact threw Mr. Woods onto a nearby sidewalk. Paramedics transported Mr. Woods to Riverside County Regional Medical Center, but doctors were unable to save him.

Witnesses have been asked to call (951) 776-1099 or (951) 486-6900 with any additional information. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that pedestrian deaths fell 12 percent from 1996 to 2006. Over that period, the total number of deaths fell from 5,449 to 4,784.
