Riverside County, California — July 9, 2012

Police are exploring the possibility that impairment was a factor Monday in a crash near La Quinta that injured at least two people.

According to deputies with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, 21-year-old Indio resident Dale Bowdle Jr. was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled near the corner of Eisenhower Drive and Washington Street. Around 6:05 p.m., Mr. Bowdle was involved in a collision with four other cars.

Rather than stopping at the scene, Mr. Bowdle reportedly drove off. Authorities later caught up with him and he was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment before being placed under suspicion of driving under the influence.

Paramedics also administered treatment to a second injured subject. According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, 203,866 suspects were arrested on suspicion of DUI in 2007.
