Fresno, California – July 11, 2012
Wednesday morning around 2 a.m., a 24-year-old female construction worker from Reedley was killed in a hit-and-run accident on California State Route 99. The accident happened on the off-ramp for Clinton Avenue on the northbound side of the road. The worker was in an area of road that had been closed off with reflective cones.
Officials from the California Highway Patrol say that the vehicle entered the closed-off area to pass slower traffic in front of them. The victim, an employee of Windsor Fuel, had no time to react before being struck.
Officers involved in the investigation are looking for Nissan, likely a newer model, that is gray with significant damage to the windshield, right front-side of the car, and has a missing right-side mirror.
Research shows that over 14,000 people die each year as a result of hit-and-run accidents.
UPDATE: The deceased victim has been identified as Reedley resident Regan Johnson, 24. Police have arrested Fresno resident Alyssa Marie Villanueva, 26, in connection with the incident.
An anonymous tip led police to Ms. Villanueva after observing her 2007 Nissan Altima, which matched the suspect vehicle description.
