Los Angeles County, California — June 15, 2012

Police say a child was injured Friday after a suspect led police on a pursuit through greater Los Angeles.

According to troopers with the California Highway Patrol, Vardan Aslanyan, 29, was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled through Burbank around 7:40 p.m. Officers observed Mr. Aslanyan driving erratically and initated a traffic stop.

Rather than cooperating, Mr. Aslanyan kept driving, eventually leading police pursuer onto Interstate 5. He drove north to California State Route 118, eventually merging onto California State Route 170 and U.S. Route 101, where he made contact with another vehicle.

Investigators say Mr. Aslanyan exited onto Franklin Avenue, despite one of his tires shearing off. He hit a second vehicle before finally coming to a stop.

A sport-utility vehicle somehow flipped during the pursuit. Paramedics transported a male child from Florida, 3, to a nearby hospital for injuries to his back.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2008 more than 2.3 million reported intersection-related crashes, resulted in more than 7,770 fatalities and approximately 733,000 injuries.
