Nathaniel Greenan, 37, was killed on Wednesday when his SUV struck a tree. The California Highway Patrol stated that Mr. Greenan left the roadway of California State Route 24 east of Camino Pablo at approximately 11:38 a.m. His Lexus RX300 left the right side of the roadway in the accident.

Mr. Greenan then struck a tree. Witnesses state that he was driving erratically before the accident, but officials have not given an official cause. No other passengers were in the Lexus SUV with Mr. Greenan.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 1.13 fatalities occurred for every 100 million miles of travel in 2009. The rate in 1966 was 5.5 deaths per 100 million miles.
