Police say fiery crash in northern Sacramento on Thursday claimed the life of the driver.

According to troopers with the California Highway Patrol, the unidentified motorist was headed west on Riego Road in a Volkswagen Passat. As the vehicle approached Garden Highway around 12:55 a.m., the driver apparently lost control.

Investigators say the Passat was launched into the air, landing on the lawn of a nearby residence and hitting a fence and a tree. The impact caused the vehicle to catch fire.

The driver sustained fatal injuries, although it is unclear whether he died on scene or at a nearby hospital. Those with further information may call (530) 674-5141.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2008 more than 2.3 million reported intersection-related crashes, resulted in more than 7,770 fatalities and approximately 733,000 injuries.
