Downey, California — February 21, 2012

A pedestrian was killed Tuesday night when he was struck by a vehicle as he walked through a Downey intersection.

According to the Downey Police Department, a man was walking at the intersection of Lakewood Boulevard and Rosecrans Avenue when he was struck by a truck about 7:55 p.m.

The pedestrian was transported to a hospital where he later died.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that 36 percent of pedestrian deaths among adults over 70 occurred at intersections, while the number for younger pedestrians was 21 percent.
