San Jose, California — February 20, 2012

A rollover accident on U.S. Route 101 killed one man and injured at least two others Monday morning.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a Chevrolet Trailblazer was traveling north on U.S. Route 101 when it came onto the exit ramp to eastbound Capitol Expressway. About 4:45 a.m. the SUV flipped ejecting two of its eight passengers.

Victor Gomez-Mendoza, 30, was one of the ejected passengers. He was declared dead at the scene. A woman was also ejected from the SUV. She suffered major injuries and was hospitalized for medical attention. A second woman was hospitalized for treatment for pain she suffered.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the number of fatalities along America’s roadways declined in 2010 for the fifth-straight year. The total number of highway deaths last year was 32,788, down 3 percent over 2009.
