Desert Center, California — February 17, 2012
A rear-end collision with semi left three El Mirage, Arizona, residents injured early Friday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, 32-year-old Kyle Gleeson was driving a van west on Interstate 10 in the left lane as Cheryl Garcia-Ward, 53, of Riverside drove a semi in the right lane. About 1:40 a.m. the van came into the right-hand lane and crashed into the trailer of the semi. Mr. Gleeson, 37-year-old Bonnie Watkins and 39-year-old Jessica Corriea had to be cut free from the van.
Mr. Gleeson and Ms. Watkins suffered major injuries. Ms. Corriea sustained moderate injuries. All three occupants of the van were flown to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. No injuries were reported for Ms. Garcia-Ward.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that more than 500,000 semis and large commercial vehicles were involved in traffic crashes in 2010. Those accidents resulted in injuries to more than 100,000 people and more than 5,000 deaths.
