A collision with a semi truck on Interstate 15 left one person dead Wednesday morning.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a semi truck and a passenger vehicle traveling north on Interstate 15 collided near Oak Hills Road about 6:50 a.m. The impact caused the semi truck to overturn. The cab of the semi truck was partially crushed and trapped the driver.

One person was declared dead at the scene.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that more than 500,000 semis and large commercial vehicles were involved in traffic crashes in 2010. Those accidents resulted in injuries to more than 100,000 people and more than 5,000 deaths.

UPDATE: The California Highway Patrol has identified the Norwalk man killed Wednesday morning in a collision on Interstate 15 as Alfred Eclipse Jr.

San Bernardino resident 32-year-old Nathan Herbert was speeding north in a 2005 Nissan 350Z on Interstate 15 when he came onto the median. He swerved back across northbound traffic and crashed into the left front wheel of a semi truck owned and operated by UPS and driven by Mr. Eclipse.

Mr. Herbet sustained minor injuries. Mr. Eclipse was declared dead at the scene.
