Camarillo, California – December 14, 2011

A collision on U.S. Route 101 involving an SUV and sports car killed one man Wednesday morning.

According to the California Highway Patrol, 65-year-old Newbury Park resident Paul Mailhot was driving a Chevrolet Corvette in the southbound fast lane on U.S. Route 101 as a Lexus SUV traveled in the next lane. About 11:35 a.m. Mr. Mailhot changed lanes and collided with the SUV. The impact sent both cars off the road and onto a farm road near Pleasant Valley Road where the SUV rolled onto its top.

Mr. Mailhot was taken to Los Robles Hospital in Thousand Oaks for medical attention to minor injuries.

The man driving the SUV died on the scene.

The National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found driver error was the primary cause in 90 percent of major traffic crashes.
