Los Angeles, California – December 12, 2011

A collision involving at least eight semi trucks on Interstate 5 left three people injured Monday night.

According to the California Highway Patrol, it had been raining all day in Los Angeles Monday causing the roads to be slick. Near California Route 14 on southbound Interstate 5 eight semi trucks collided around 8:25 p.m. Four of those semi trucks were tanker trucks carrying chemicals, milk, crude oil and gas. None of the fluids leaked onto the interstate.

Three people were hospitalized with minor injuries.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that more than 500,000 semis and large commercial vehicles were involved in traffic crashes in 2010. Those accidents resulted in injuries to more than 100,000 people and more than 5,000 deaths.
