Fontana, California – December 3, 2011

A vehicle struck and killed a Fontana man crossing a street at a Fontana intersection Saturday evening.

According to the Fontana Police Department, Domingo Nava, 61, of Fontana was walking across Sierra Avenue as a vehicle traveled in the direction of the intersection with Reed Street. About 5:50 p.m. the vehicle struck Mr. Nava.

Mr. Nava was transported to Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Fontana. He later died in the hospital.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that 36 percent of pedestrian deaths among adults over 70 occurred at intersections, while the number for younger pedestrians was 21 percent.
