El Monte, California – September 29, 2011

A car struck an elderly man Thursday as he crossed the street causing critical injuries to the man.

According to the El Monte Police Department, near the intersection of Cortada Street and Vane Avenue an elderly man was walking across the street in an area without a crosswalk. About 5:30 a.m. a car struck the man.

The man was taken to Los Angeles County – University of Southern California Medical Center for medical attention. His condition was highly critical. He suffered major head trauma. The man’s identity has not been released.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that 36 percent of pedestrian deaths among adults over 70 occurred at intersections, while the number for younger pedestrians was 21 percent.
