Palm Desert, California – September 26, 2011
A collision between a truck and Palm Desert Police officer on his motorcycle caused major injuries to the officer Monday afternoon.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, a Palm Desert motorcycle police officer was traveling near Cook Street and St. James Place. A pickup truck towing a trailer started to turn onto St. James Place about 3:15 p.m. The officer crashed into the truck and was thrown from his vehicle.
The motorcycle officer suffered major injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening. He was hospitalized for medical attention.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration there were 4,778 fatalities as a result of collisions involving motorcycles in California in 2006.
UPDATE: The California Highway Patrol has identified the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department motorcycle officer 35-year-old Deputy Eric Romaine as the man injured in the Palm Desert collision Monday. Deputy Romaine was traveling about 25 miles per hour on Cook Street when a second vehicle came into his lane.
