Fremont, California – September 26, 2011
A rear-end collision that killed an elderly driver Sunday afternoon led to the arrest of a drunk man.
According to the Fremont Police Department, Todd Lovejoy, 53, was driving a Toyota Tundra when he smashed into the back end of two GMC pickup trucks. The crash occurred about 4 p.m. at an unidentified location. The impact forced one of the GMC truck into a utility pole causing the truck to rollover.
The driver, 83, of the rolled pickup truck was declared dead at the scene.
Mr. Lovejoy was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and is being investigated for vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, alcohol was a factor in 1,489 traffic fatalities in 2007.
