Hawthorne, California – August 23, 2011

A car crashed into a utility pole Sunday afternoon causing a fiery wreck that killed one woman.

According to the Hawthorne Police Department, a Cadillac sped west on West 120th Street about 80 miles per hour. At Prairie Avenue the Cadillac passed through a red light and collided with a Toyota sedan. The Cadillac then smashed into a utility pole about 12:55 p.m. The car caught fire in the wreck.

The driver of the Cadillac escaped the fire, but the female passenger did not. She was burned in the crash and declared dead at the scene. The driver was transported to Harbor-University of California Los Angeles Medical Center for treatment. The driver of the Toyota was not harmed.
