Fremont, California – August 24, 2011
A man exchanging insurance information was hit and killed by a man driving on a sidewalk Wednesday morning.
According to the Fremont Police Department, a San Ramon man, 47, and a San Ramon woman, 37, had a minor traffic accident in southbound traffic on Interstate 680. They agreed to exchange insurance information off of the interstate. They exited the interstate and park on the side of Washington Boulevard.
As they exchanged information a man from Fremont, 83, drove a 2004 Buick west on Washington Boulevard. He came onto the sidewalk and hit the man from San Ramon.
The Buick crashed down a hill. It came to rest against a tree and a chain-link fence. The man from San Ramon was discovered trapped underneath the Buick. The driver was unconscious.
Both men were transported to a hospital in San Jose for medical attention. The man from San Ramon was declared dead at the hospital.
UPDATE: The Alameda County Coroner’s office has identified the man from San Ramon killed in this crash as John Soopikian, 47.
