Auburn, California – August 20, 2011

A head-on collision caused by a 17-year-old driver who fled the scene after causing major injuries Friday morning.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 17-year-old pulled off of Lone Star Road in a white Acura Integra into traffic on the Grass Valley Highway. He did not take note of the traffic and caused 60-year-old Grass Valley resident Sandy Castle veered her Ford F-150 to avoid hitting the driver. She collided head-on with 76-year-old Auburn resident Edmund Moley in a blue Honda Odyssey about 9:45 a.m.

The teen fled from the scene, but was followed by a witness. The witness took a photo of the driver, who returned to the scene, but fled again. The teen was found at his resident in San Jose. He refused a chemical sobriety test and was interviewed. Though he did not hit any vehicles he will likely be charged with felony hit-and-run.

Ms. Castle and Mr. Moley suffered serious injuries. They were taken to Sutter Roseville Medical Center for medical attention.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the number of fatalities along America’s roadways declined in 2010 for the fifth-straight year. The total number of highway deaths last year was 32,788, down 3 percent over 2009.
