San Clemente, California – July 25, 2011
Two men were injured after a semi unknowingly side-swiped a car causing a second collision Monday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a man from San Clemente, 26, drove a 2008 Honda south on Interstate 5 when it was side-swiped by a semi. The semi continued on after hitting the Honda, but it is suspected the driver was not aware he hit the car.
The Honda was stopped in traffic with its injured driver inside. About 5:30 a.m. a box truck made an attempt to avoid hitting the Honda, causing the truck to roll onto its side in the middle of traffic.
The man driving the box truck, 46, and the man in the Honda were injured and were transported to the hospital for medical attention.
The exact location of this accident has not been released.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that more than 500,000 semis and large commercial vehicles were involved in traffic crashes in 2010. Those accidents resulted in injuries to more than 100,000 people and more than 5,000 deaths
