Long Beach, California – July 13, 2011

A man crossing a Long Beach street was hit by a vehicle and critically injured Tuesday afternoon.

The Long Beach Police Department reports, a man from Long Beach, 66, was crossing Magnolia Avenue about 1:20 p.m. near West Ocean Boulevard and West Broadway. A woman in a gold Lexus sport-utility vehicle hit the man.

The woman had paused for those walking across the street in the middle of the block at a crosswalk. It is not known of the man was crossing at a crosswalk at the time of the accident.

The man was taken to a local hospital by the Long Beach Fire Department and was still listed in critical condition Wednesday.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that 36 percent of pedestrian deaths among adults over 70 occurred at intersections, while the number for younger pedestrians was 21 percent.
