Soquel, California – June 29, 2011
A car hit a man on a bicycle killing the rider Monday night.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a 31-year-old man from Soquel rode a black beach cruiser bicycle north on Soquel-San Jose Road near Oneill Lane. A white Infiniti QX4 traveling north on Soquel-San Jose Road hit the bicyclist just after 10 p.m.
The bicyclist was killed in the crash.
The driver of the Infiniti did not stay at the scene after the collision. He returned over 30 minutes later.
The bicyclist did not appear to be wearing a helmet. His bicycle also seemed to lack reflectors and lights, according to the California Highway Patrol.
More than 27,000 California residents have already pledged their support to People For Bikes. According to Bikes Belong, a commuter bicyclist goes almost nine years in between accidents.
UPDATE: The woman responsible for the accident that killed 31-year-old Noel Hamilton on June 27 was arrested August 9. She has been identified by the California Highway Patrol as Soquel resident Sundara J. Wertz, 33. She was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run.
