San Diego, California – June 25, 2011
A van hit and killed a man in a wheelchair Saturday night.
The man, 51, crossed into the intersection at West Point Loma Boulevard and Midway Drive in front of a Jesus Christ is Lord Travel Center Ford van around 9 p.m. The van hit the man when the van began to turn, according to the San Diego Police Department.
The man in the wheelchair was found dead upon the arrival of emergency response teams.
The driver of the van, 60, and the van are not associated with Sam Kholi Ministries and Jesus is Lord Travel Center, according to the company’s owner Sam Kholi.
Neither the driver nor the passenger in the van were injured in the crash.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in a 30-mph zone faces three times the risk of fatal as a pedestrian walking in a 25-mph zone.
