Pomona, California — May 16, 2011

Police say a semi fatally struck two people on foot along California State Route 60 in Pomona early Monday morning.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the drivers of a Lexus and a Ford Mustang sports car had pulled off along the shoulder of eastbound California State Route 60, near Exit 29A (South Garey Avenue), shortly after 3:10 a.m. Both victims had exited their vehicles when the semi approached from the west.

For unknown reasons, the trucker swerved onto the roadside, hitting both pedestrians and their cars. Both victims died as a result of the accident, although it is unclear whether they died on scene or were hospitalized first.

Paramedics transported the unidentified trucker to Pomona Valley Hospital. His semi tipped over as a result of the crash. The nature and extent of his injuries is unknown.

Police shut down the road to traffic heading east until at least 5:15 a.m.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that more than 500,000 semis and large commercial vehicles were involved in traffic crashes in 2010. Those accidents resulted in injuries to more than 100,000 people and more than 5,000 deaths.
