San Bernardino, California — April 11, 2011
Police say a motorcyclist sustained fatal injures in a crash with a semi in the Valley View area of San Bernardino on Monday.
The San Bernardino Police Department reports that biker Thomas Edward Glaze, 49, was riding westbound along Orange Show Road (East Pioneer Road), between Tippecanoe Avenue and Waterman Avenue, around 3:55 p.m. A trucker then approached in an eastbound semi and crossed into Mr. Glaze’s path while executing a left turn.
Mr. Glaze was unable to avoid the collision and struck the semi. Paramedics transported him to Loma Linda Unviersity medical Center for treatment. After 12 days of hospitalization, the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office said, he died.
In California, all riders are required to wear helmets when on a motorcycle or any motorized scooter.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that more than 500,000 semis and large commercial vehicles were involved in traffic crashes in 2010. Those accidents resulted in injuries to more than 100,000 people and more than 5,000 deaths.
