Valley Center, California — April 24, 2011

Police say two children were among three people hospitalized when a collision involving a BMW and a Jeep sport-utility vehicle, near Valley Center Community Church and the post office in Valley Center on Sunday.

The California Highway Patrol reports that an unlicensed female driver was traveling along Valley Center Road around 2:40 p.m. when she failed to heed a red light at Cole Grade Road. The BMW entered the intersection and collided with a northbound Jeep SUV.

Paramedics arrived and transported a 4-year-old boy and a 3-year-old to Rady Children’s Hospital. Both were seated in child safety seats in the rear of the SUV but were improperly restrained and suffered head injuries.

Another passenger travelig in the SUV, 60, blacked out during the crash and was treated for moderate injuries at Sharp Memorial Hospital. The SUV’s driver experienced pain and received treatment at the scene.

The BMW’s driver also suffered minor pain but decline transport to the hospital. She received a ticket for running a red light and driving without a license.

According to the California Highway Patrol, more than 925 children younger than 14 were either injured or killed in traffic collisions in California in 2009.
