Parkwood, California — April 18, 2011
Police say an officer with the California Highway Patrol was among three people injured in a crash involving a semi along California State Route 99 near Parkwood on Monday.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the injured officer was traveling south along California State Route 99, near Exit 151 (Avenue 12), shortly after 8:25 a.m., when he observed what appeared to be a stranded motorist and pulled onto the shoulder. A trucker then approached from the north in a semi and struck the police cruiser and forcing it into the disabled vehicle.
The impact inflicted two travelers in the disabled vehicle, as well as the officer. Paramedics arrived and transported the officer to Sierra Community Hospital for treatment, while the other two victims were taken to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center. No injuries to the trucker were reported.
Police reduced traffic in the area as they conducted an investigation, cleared debris from the roadway and attended to the injured.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that more than 500,000 semis and large commercial vehicles were involved in traffic crashes in 2010. Those accidents resulted in injuries to more than 100,000 people and more than 5,000 deaths.
