Santa Cruz, California — March 26, 2011
Police say a vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian near at a Veterans of Foreign Wars post 5888 in Live Oak on Saturday, then fled the scene.
The California Highway Patrol and Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department report that a Live Oak man, 37, was hit by a Chrysler sedan — either a Dodge Magnum or a Chrysler 300 — around 11 p.m. after leaving a quinceanera celebration at the VFW near the intersection of Rodriguez Street and Seventh Avenue.
Paramedics were summoned to the scene and transported the pedestrian to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The victim may have been a cook or waiter. His name is being withheld pending family notification.
Bystanders described the suspect vehicle as dark-colored with chrome wheels. The suspect driver has been characterized as a Hispanic male. Those with information related to the crash have been asked to call (916) 471-1121.
A quinceanera is rite of passage in the Latin American community, celebrating a girl’s 15th birthday.
