Oakland, California — March 17, 2011

Police say a suspected car thief triggered a crash near Mills College in the Frick area, east of Oakland, that injured a mother and four children on Thursday.

The Oakland Police Department reports that the suspect was behind the wheel of a stolen silver Toyota, driving along 60th Avenue as it approached the intersection with Camden Street, northwest of Concordia Park. Meanwhile, Olivia Perez was traveling along Camden Street in a silver Lexus.

Investigators say the suspect T-boned the Lexus, injuring Ms. Perez and her four female children, who range in age from 2 to 19. The driver of the Toyota and suspected thief then fled the scene on foot, leading officers to go door to door looking for evidence.

Paramedics were summoned to the scene and provided medical care for Ms. Perez. The four girls were taken to a nearby hospital. The family had recently relocated from Hayward to the Oakland area.

The stolen Toyota sustained serious front-end damage, while the Lexus was smashed in on the driver’s side.
