Police say a wrong-way crash along North Dinuba Boulevard (California State Route 63) on Monday left one 20-something woman dead and another with major injuries.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the deceased victim was headed north on California State Route 63 when her vehicle veered into the lane of oncoming traffic around 2:30 p.m. She smashed into a second vehicle, heading southbound.

Paramedics were summoned to the scene, where the first woman, identified only as being in her early 20s, was pronounced dead. The second driver, characterized as being in her late 20s, was transported by helicopter to Fresno’s Community Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Neither woman’s identity has been released. The crash remains under investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 1.13 fatalities occurred for every 100 million miles of travel in 2009. The rate in 1966 was 5.5 deaths per 100 million miles.
